About Vintage Frame

Ask for abstract and you get a hundred near-misses; Vintage Frame is one of the few that answers the question as asked. It sits at 1 saves — too few to call it popular, which is exactly why it is worth a look before everyone else finds it. The designer behind it is Almairatype Studio. There are no reviews on it yet, so judge it by the preview and not by a score that does not exist.

Check the background: an illustration sold as a PNG with a soft halo will show that halo on every coloured page you place it on. Put it to work on antique first. If it survives that, it will survive whatever you had in mind next. One thing we always do and you should too: open the preview full size. A thumbnail hides exactly the detail that decides whether abstract is really what you are getting.

The words on the listing are art, background, banner and border, and they are worth reading as a description rather than as tags. The neighbouring searches are floral, botanical, flower, leaf and plant — worth a look if this particular file is close but not quite it. The wording people arrive with is watercolor paintings, animal drawings, bird drawing, hibiscus flower drawing and flower drawings, and we would rather shelve for those requests than for how a thumbnail looks in a grid. We keep it under Botanical and Animal Illustrations, which is where to look if you want the rest of the botanical and animal illustrations we have gone through.

How to use this file

  1. Download the set from Creative Fabrica and unzip it — brush sets arrive as .brushset for Procreate or .abr for Photoshop.
  2. Open the brush file on the iPad and it installs itself into a new set; in Photoshop, drag the .abr onto the canvas.
  3. Try every brush once on a scrap canvas and delete the ones you will not use — a bloated brush list slows you down more than it helps.
  4. Keep reference sheets at full size in a separate folder: downscaled references hide exactly the detail you needed them for.
