About Vintage Frame

What we like about Vintage Frame is how little it tries to be everything — it does abstract, and that is the job we wanted filled on the Botanical and Animal Illustrations shelf. It comes from Almairatype Studio. With 3 saves it has barely been seen, and that is neither a good nor a bad sign on a catalogue this size. Nobody has reviewed it, which we do not hold against a new file — but it does mean the preview is the only honest evidence.

We would use it the way the listing hints — antique — and that is also where we would start if you are trying it for the first time. Check the background: an illustration sold as a PNG with a soft halo will show that halo on every coloured page you place it on. The licence tab and the full-size preview are the whole of our due diligence here, and they take about a minute between them.

Filed as art, background, banner and border. Tags are a rough instrument, but a consistent set like that usually means the file is what it claims. We track what people actually type before they land here: watercolor paintings, animal drawings, bird drawing, hibiscus flower drawing and flower drawings. If that is roughly what you were after, this file is in the right family. The neighbouring searches are floral, botanical, flower, leaf and plant — worth a look if this particular file is close but not quite it. We keep it under Botanical and Animal Illustrations, which is where to look if you want the rest of the botanical and animal illustrations we have gone through.

How to use this file

  1. Download the set from Creative Fabrica and unzip it — brush sets arrive as .brushset for Procreate or .abr for Photoshop.
  2. Open the brush file on the iPad and it installs itself into a new set; in Photoshop, drag the .abr onto the canvas.
  3. Try every brush once on a scrap canvas and delete the ones you will not use — a bloated brush list slows you down more than it helps.
  4. Keep reference sheets at full size in a separate folder: downscaled references hide exactly the detail you needed them for.
