About Retro Flying Saucer Collection

What we like about Retro Flying Saucer Collection is how little it tries to be everything — it does alien, and that is the job we wanted filled on the Line Art and References shelf. Nobody has reviewed it, which we do not hold against a new file — but it does mean the preview is the only honest evidence. The save count is still small at 1, so read this as our opinion and not a consensus. It comes from Cute Things.

Reference line art is for practice, so clean unbroken outlines matter; a sketchy reference teaches you somebody else's shaky hand. The obvious job for it is black, and obvious is right here — the file was built around that and it shows. Before downloading, give the preview a full-size look and read the licence tab — two clicks, and they answer most of what the listing leaves unsaid.

The words on the listing are alien spacecraft, alien technology, alien vehicle and black saucer, and they are worth reading as a description rather than as tags. Put next to the usual requests here — drawing ideas, sketch ideas, flower drawing, drawing reference and anime drawing — this one covers the plain version of the job, which is the version people need most often. It is shelved with the rest of the line art and references, and that is the quickest way to see what else sits in the same register before you settle on this one. If none of this quite fits, the adjacent requests are line art, outline, sketch, drawing and portrait and they stay on this page.

How to use this file

  1. Download the set from Creative Fabrica and unzip it — brush sets arrive as .brushset for Procreate or .abr for Photoshop.
  2. Open the brush file on the iPad and it installs itself into a new set; in Photoshop, drag the .abr onto the canvas.
  3. Try every brush once on a scrap canvas and delete the ones you will not use — a bloated brush list slows you down more than it helps.
  4. Keep reference sheets at full size in a separate folder: downscaled references hide exactly the detail you needed them for.
