About Japanese Food Illustration

What we like about Japanese Food Illustration is how little it tries to be everything — it does asia, and that is the job we wanted filled on the Line Art and References shelf. It is medzcreative's work. The save count is still small at 75, so read this as our opinion and not a consensus. It stands at 5.0 out of 5 across 2 reviews, and we read the low scores first when there are any.

Reference line art is for practice, so we pick the sheets with clean, unbroken outlines; a sketchy reference teaches you somebody else's shaky hand. We keep it filed mentally under background, which is the use that needs the least adjusting afterwards. One thing we always do and you should too: open the preview full size. A thumbnail hides exactly the detail that decides whether asia is really what you are getting.

It answers to art, asian, bowl and cartoon, and that spread of wording is worth noting: a file tagged this consistently usually behaves the way the preview suggests. What this shelf gets asked for is drawing ideas, sketch ideas, flower drawing, drawing reference and anime drawing. That list is why these files are here and not some prettier ones. If none of this quite fits, the adjacent requests are line art, outline, sketch, drawing and portrait and they stay on this page. We filed it under Line Art and References for the obvious reason, and the shelf is small enough to read end to end.

How to use this file

  1. Download the set from Creative Fabrica and unzip it — brush sets arrive as .brushset for Procreate or .abr for Photoshop.
  2. Open the brush file on the iPad and it installs itself into a new set; in Photoshop, drag the .abr onto the canvas.
  3. Try every brush once on a scrap canvas and delete the ones you will not use — a bloated brush list slows you down more than it helps.
  4. Keep reference sheets at full size in a separate folder: downscaled references hide exactly the detail you needed them for.
