About Retro Arcade Illustrations

If 8 bit is what you came for, start here — Retro Arcade Illustrations is the plainest reading of that request on the Textures and Effects shelf. Nobody has reviewed it, which we do not hold against a new file — but it does mean the preview is the only honest evidence. 1 save means nobody has tested it for you. We still think it holds up. It comes from sweetmangodsn.

Our own plan for it is arcade, because that is where this kind of file does the least arguing with you. A texture is only as useful as the resolution it ships at, so check it covers the canvas you work on before building a piece around it. We check two things before any download like this: the preview at full size, and whether the licence covers what you plan to do with it.

Search for art and background and this is the file those words land on; they are all the same file, filed under whichever phrase you happened to type. People after this usually search texture, effect, action, overlay and style too, and the shelf is sorted so those all land in the same place. We keep it under Textures and Effects, which is where to look if you want the rest of the textures and effects we have gone through. Most of the traffic on this shelf comes in on action poses reference drawing, tattoo style drawings, paper airplane drawing, manga style drawing and paper boat drawing, and we picked the files on it with those requests in mind rather than by browsing prettiest-first.

How to use this file

  1. Download the set from Creative Fabrica and unzip it — brush sets arrive as .brushset for Procreate or .abr for Photoshop.
  2. Open the brush file on the iPad and it installs itself into a new set; in Photoshop, drag the .abr onto the canvas.
  3. Try every brush once on a scrap canvas and delete the ones you will not use — a bloated brush list slows you down more than it helps.
  4. Keep reference sheets at full size in a separate folder: downscaled references hide exactly the detail you needed them for.
